THE COURTING BEGINS! : The polar bear staff from the zoo contacted me early this morning as Ahpun and Louie were interacting today in a very playfull manor.

I was only able to capture a few frames of the togetherness before sleep overtook both of them.

Later today I will return out there and see if I can add to this album.

Someone asked about the big white mat. That is actually a large plastic ice cube that they play with. It was donated by friends of Ahpun from Switzerland.

LYUTYIK : Well what everyone has been waiting for......the first shots of Lyutyik at the Alaska Zoo. These were taken at 8 PM on Wednesday, when he was let out by himself in the enclosure! All I can say is he is one big bear.

You may notice several shots in color and several in black & white. Yes he does have an orange/yellow tint to his skin but I have been assured he will be eventually as white as Ahpun.

It has to do with molting, the stress of the move and a few other factors that are above me.

You will just have to come out and check him out for yourselves.

These are screen shots, low in resolution, from the Polar Bear cam. If I see Ahpun doing anything interesting I'll try to get a shot of it. NORTH MEETS SOUTH! : Ahpun from the Alaska Zoo, and Luytyik from Sea World Australia were formally introduced for the first time today and I'm happy to report that after a wee bit of a shakey start they seem to be adjusting.

Once the snarling and posturing was out of the way they were brought in for breakfast, and while in there the staff loaded up the exhibit with treats and enrichment items.

When they came out the second time they kept the bitterness to a minimum and each starting playing with different toys.

I'M HERE! : LUYTYIK arrived this evening at the Anchorage Airport safe and sound. This series of images shows what it takes to get him off the airplane. Due to the construction of the shipping crate I was unable to get any good shots of him so you will all have to wait till Thursday until I return.

AHPUN'S ICE CUBE : Ahpun, out at the Alaska Zoo was treated to an ice cube enrichment today. A large 250 lb. plastic ice cube was intruduced into her enclosure and she spent the better part of the afternoon investigating it.
